IDS and Layne Canada find a new way to drill the shallow oil sands of the
McMurray Formation in northern Alberta, Canada. As shown here the Sag-D Twin
Wells 1 & 2 were turned from vertical to horizontal in less than 100 meters
true vertical depth.
With the ability to turn holes to horizontal and set 13-3/8” casing in the
turn, 7” slotted liners can be set as far as 700 meters horizontally with
twin hole separation of 5 meters or less.
A new portable drilling rig on wheels allows Layne Canada and IDS to move onto
the site, set up and start drilling is less than 24 hours. This proving to be
much faster and more cost effective than conventional oil and gas drilling
operations.
