SAN DIEGO PROJECT
30 Years of Directional Experience Makes Trenchless Crossing by
I.D.S. LLC a Quick (and Sometimes Comical) Success
With interference by everything from puzzled motorists to worried environmentalists, the trenchless crossing under Interstate Highway 5 near Carlsbad, California was still a total success. HMS Construction contracted I.D.S. LLC to drill 800 feet from the east side of the highway in order to install a water main extension into a new subdivision on the west side.

Initial challenges for starting and completing the project were thought to be compliance with CalTran's regulations but it soon became clear that interference would arrive on a more local level. Nearby homeowners were shaking their heads and an environmental group with decibel counters humming soon arrived trying to close the project down due to noise levels they claimed were disturbing the Netcatcher birds inhabiting the bay. The environmentalists soon left the site in a despondent mood when their counters showed freeway traffic was still much moisier than the drilling equipment. The real

highlight, however, were the motorist who called the California Highway Patrol when the spotted Jay Martin on the highway shoulder with a utility scanner and several HMS crew members in tow. A patrolman arrived and said he was responding to call that a ”disoriented blind man with a cane was walking on the side of the freeway and there were several people trying to help him.” The provided much comical relief for a job that technically was quick and on target.
